Mulgrave School Choir (2002, 2003)
The
grade 3 to 6 students in this ensemble join choir as a co-curricular
enrichment activity. Many of these students have
been in choir in previous years, while for some, it is their
first year. In addition to participating in the large
school concerts, junior school choristers have taken part
in various external performances, such as Christmas-time
events, music festivals, the local community parade and
short tours. The Mulgrave Junior Choir (in a massed
form) has the honour of having performed twice with the
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (not in combination with any
other choral group!). Last year, the choir sang with
the highly regarded adult ensemble, Laudate Singers, and
also hosted a special concert with the Vancouver Youth Symphony
Orchestra, which featured music of the school's honorary
governor, award-winning composer Michael Conway Baker.
Dr. Shirley
Perry and Mr. Claude McLean, the
directors of the choirs that make up this larger ensemble,
both have a wide international background in terms of their
training and professional development. In addition
to being specialized educators, both have been educational
researchers and continue to maintain an interest in the inter-relation
between research and practice. Dr. Perry and Mr. McLean
have enjoyed working with a wide range of students, from pre-school
through adult, in a variety of settings: private and
public schools, conservatories, university/college, community
organizations, individual lessons, coaching and workshops.
Their choirs are once again glad to join forces for
this special event.
